Key Aspects

Initially engaged to supply high tensile Freyssibars for rocking collar foundation
After further discussions, Freyssinet provided an alternative proposal for the post tensioning system at the top of the arches
Subsequently awarded supply and installation contract for the horizontal re-stressable strands at the top of the minor and major arches
Achieved significant cost savings for the client
March Construction, part of the Soletanche Freyssinet Group, installed the micropiles on the arch, which made up a significant portion of the total works

The Bridge of Remembrance is one of two main war memorials in Christchurch, New Zealand. It is dedicated to those who died in World War I, and serves as a memorial for those who participated in two World Wars as well as subsequent conflicts in Borneo, Korea, Malaya and Vietnam. It is a Category I Heritage Structure.

The February 2011 Christchurch earthquake damaged the arch. The strengthening scheme was to insert new steel box sections within the arch, filling with concrete, and utilising a rocking seismic response in case of an earthquake. Essentially meaning that that arch itself must be reconstructed with hinges to allow the rocking motion as well as a rocking collar foundation.
